It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace

1. Introduction

We live in a remote, fast-paced, technologically advanced world. Not only does the physical development of a person matter, but mental health also emerges as a fundamental part of a successful life. Although attention to mental well-being has increased in recent times, it is still poorly nurtured in many workplaces.
The mental health of employees is a very important topic that affects productivity, innovation, creativity, and workplace satisfaction

2. The Importance of Mental Health in the Workplace

The workplace is naturally a stressful environment. Heavy workloads, deadlines, goals, and constant competition combine to increase employee stress.

  • Prolonged stress → depression, anxiety

  • Mental problems → physical illnesses, memory loss, attention deficit

  • Decreased productivity, increased absenteeism

According to the WHO, depression and anxiety cause more than 1 trillion USD in losses to the global economy per year.

3. Current Situation: Mental Health in the Workplace

Many employees today are still afraid to disclose their mental health problems.

Main reasons:

  • Society's culture of compliance

  • Fear of the label "mental illness"

  • Fear of losing their job

  • Insufficient workplace resources

  • Management ignorance

According to a study by the APA, 71% of employees say that their employers do not provide significant mental health support.

4. Work Stress, Mental Health Problems & Suicide

ILO and WHO reports show that work stress and long working hours directly contribute to higher rates of heart disease, stroke, depression, and suicide.

  • 744,000 deaths annually → due to long working hours (WHO & ILO, 2021)

  • “Karoshi” in Japan – work-related deaths 🇯🇵

  • South Korea has the highest suicide rate due to work stress.

5. Employer Responsibilities

Employees are the backbone of the organization, and protecting their mental health is an organizational duty.

Key benefits:

  • Increased productivity

  • Decreased absenteeism

  • Improved work–family balance

  • Stronger, positive corporate culture

  • Enhanced innovation

6. Recommendations for Prevention & Promotion in the Workplace

6.1 A Peaceful Work Environment

  • A non-isolating, open environment

6.2 Modern Management Practices

  • Lean management / Japanese 5S / Kaizen 🇯🇵

6.3 Creating an Inclusive Culture

7. Conclusion

If mental health in the workplace is not prioritized, future productivity, safety, innovation, and organizational success will be seriously affected. Protecting the mental health of employees is not only a moral responsibility but also a long-term business strategy for organizational success. 🌱📈

  5. As someone working in hospitality, I see every day how deeply mental health shapes both service quality and guest experience. Hotels are built on human interaction—front desk staff, housekeepers, chefs, and managers all carry the emotional weight of long hours, guest expectations, and constant pressure to deliver smiles even when they’re struggling inside. This article is a timely reminder that protecting mental wellbeing is not just a moral responsibility but a business necessity. In our industry, a stressed or burnt-out employee cannot create the warmth and care that guests remember. When we invest in listening, appreciation, and supportive workplace cultures, we don’t just reduce absenteeism—we elevate the dignity of our teams and strengthen the very heart of hospitality. Prioritizing mental health is how we ensure that hotels remain places of welcome, not just for guests, but for the people who make the welcome possible
