Sri Lanka's tea industry: How to motivate employees using new technology and AI
Introduction
Ceylon Tea is one of the main pillars of the Sri Lankan economy. However, the industry currently faces several serious challenges, such as labor shortages, maintaining the quality of tea picking, lack of expansion of new tea plantations, and high production costs. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies has become essential to overcome these challenges. However, for this technological revolution to be successful, it must not be a job-killer for tea industry workers but rather an upliftment of their role. Below are practical strategies that can be used to motivate tea industry workers in Sri Lanka using AI and new technologies.
I. AI and new technological applications in the tea industry.
There are several key technological applications that are changing the role of workers in the tea industry:
|
Technical |
Application Role |
Impact on the employee |
|
Robots with Vision
AI |
Identifying and
picking the right leaves. (Two Leaves and a Bud) when
picking tea leaves. |
Increasing the
accuracy and speed of tea leaf picking.
|
|
AI-based quality control |
Instantly
assess the quality of tea during the tea production process. |
Minimizing errors by providing instant feedback to tea factory workers.
|
|
Drone technology |
Tea plantation
monitoring, yield prediction and accurate application of fertilizers/pesticides |
Providing data
analysis to estate supervision employees. |
|
Mobile Apps |
Recording the
quantity, quality, and daily goals of tea leaf picking. |
Transparency and instant notifications about performance. |
II. 5 Strategies to Motivate Employees Through AI
The following strategies can be used to increase employee motivation by introducing AI technology:
-
Reduce workload and increase dignity.
Tea picking is a labor-intensive, tedious task. By taking over these tedious tasks, machines and AI robots can free up workers for more valuable tasks.
•Incentive: Assign higher-level roles to workers as machine operators, data supervisors, or quality controllers. This increases their social status and job satisfaction. -
Rewards based on immediate and objective feedback.
AI systems can provide immediate data on the quality and quantity of tea leaves during picking.
•Strategy: Use Vision AI to measure the quality (percentage of correct leaves) and quantity of the picked leaves and provide immediate incentives to workers based on that data.
•Incentive: Ensures transparency and fairness over traditional methods. Immediate recognition of the worker’s efforts increases their motivation. -
New skills training and career development.
Introducing AI technology will provide employees with the opportunity to learn new skills.
•Strategy: Provide training programs in Sinhala and Tamil, such as drone pilot training, AI system maintenance, and data analysis.
•Incentive: These new skills will increase the market value of employees and open up opportunities for advancement within the tea industry itself. -
Improving health and safety.
Using drone technology to apply fertilizers and pesticides can minimize employee exposure to chemicals.
•Strategy: Identify weather risks in advance and inform employees through AI-based forecasts.
•Incentive: Employees will gain confidence and commitment when they know that the organization cares about their health and safety. -
Empowering them to make data-driven decisions.
Empower field workers to make small decisions based on data provided by AI (e.g., soil condition, moisture).
•Strategy: Give estate supervisors and senior workers access to AI analytics reports and encourage them to combine that data with their experience to make decisions.
•Incentive: This increases workers’ autonomy and responsibility, making them feel like important stakeholders in the industry.
III. Sri Lanka-specific suggestions for successful implementation.
To successfully introduce AI technology, the Sri Lankan tea industry should focus on the following:
-
Communication and transparency: It should be clearly communicated to employees that the purpose of introducing new technologies is not to lose jobs but to make work easier and increase quality.
-
Bilingual training: Provide all technical training materials and interfaces in Sinhala and Tamil.
-
Benefit sharing: Share the benefits of higher yields and savings from the use of technology with employees through fair salary increases and bonuses.
The future of the Sri Lankan tea industry depends on the successful adoption of AI and new technologies. These technologies can make the role of workers safer, more productive, and more respectful, thereby increasing the motivation and commitment of workers in the tea industry. To maintain the quality of Sri Lankan tea, a successful collaboration between technology and human talent is essential.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your valuable comment. I appreciate your point on the importance of AI in enhancing productivity and employee motivation in Srilanka tea industry.
DeleteA very insightful blog! It clearly shows how AI can support workers, improve productivity, and strengthen Sri Lanka’s tea industry. Technology used the right way can truly uplift employee skills and motivation.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your encouraging feedback. I appreciate your insights on the positive role of AI in strengthening the tea industry and supporting employees.
DeleteReading this article on AI in the tea industry reminded me how deeply technology and hospitality share a common challenge: balancing efficiency with dignity. In hotels, just like in tea estates, our people are the heartbeat of the experience. Guests don’t remember the software we use—they remember the warmth of the staff. What inspires me here is the idea that AI can free workers from repetitive tasks and elevate them into roles of greater responsibility, whether that’s a tea plucker becoming a drone operator or a room attendant becoming a guest experience analyst. For Sri Lanka, this is more than a technical upgrade—it’s a cultural shift. If we communicate clearly that technology is here to support workers, not replace them, we can build trust and motivation. In hospitality, I’ve seen how transparent feedback systems and skill development programs transform morale. The same principles can uplift tea workers: dignity, recognition, and growth. Ultimately, whether in a tea estate or a hotel lobby, the future of Sri Lanka’s service industries depends on blending human talent with smart technology—so that every worker feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute to excellence
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your valuable feedback. I appreciate your comment highlighting the importance of AI in improving productivity and employee motivation in the Sri Lankan tea industry. I agree that adopting a balanced approach is essential to ensure both employees and the industry benefit equally. Your insights are truly helpful, and I will incorporate them to further strengthen my writing.
DeleteVery insightful... Especially the idea of using AI to enhance plucking quality. If workers can get real-time feedback through simple mobile apps, it would improve both productivity and confidence. The challenge will be making these tools accessible to older workers who are less comfortable with technology.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughtful comment. I agree that using AI for real-time feedback can greatly improve plucking quality and productivity. Ensuring accessibility for older workers is indeed an important consideration. Your insights are much appreciated.
